The Guidance Center at Mercy Career & Technical High School consists of professional counselors whose primary goal is to serve our students as well as their families in meeting success.
We offer a safe, nurturing environment for students to grow, explore their curiosity, lead active lives and feel empowered to pursue their dreams.
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is made up of a team of trained adults chosen from the faculty and staff to provide support to students who appear to be experiencing marked behavioral changes or a high level of emotional distress which may be related to such issues as abuse, anxiety/depression or substance use.
Due to systemic challenges that impact urban communities such as poverty, learning differences, and other traumas, Mercy Tech provides a range of counseling services to ensure student success and well-being. Students collaborate with a school counselor throughout their four years. A full-time social worker and school counselors make referrals to outside counseling agencies for students who require additional support, specifically with CORA Services and Catapult Learning.
Mercy Tech also offers internal support groups as needed around topics such as substance use, bereavement, healthy relationships, and self-esteem.
Additionally, 9th grade students participate in a Life Skills seminar course to explore topics that will help them navigate the transition to high school. Topics include: team building, decision making, healthy relationships, family communications, stress management, gratitude and hope, self-care, peer pressure, among others.
Support groups are formed when the need arises or when numbers warrant a group formation. Otherwise, issues are handled one-on-one or in the L.A.F. (Life in a Flash) classes in ninth grade.
Mercy Career & Technical High School opens doors and creates opportunities, providing contemporary job options and a non-traditional path to higher education.
